High Cost of Living Allowance
4th July, 1947
The Secretary of State for the Colonies has approved, as a
measure of temporary relief pending consideration of the report of
the Salaries Commission, a revision of the temporary non-pensionable
high cost of living allowance in accordance with the attached Scales
A and B. Tables I, II, III and IV provide a ready-reckoner for the
computation of the revised high cost of living allowance on various
salaries. The allowance will continue to be payable only in respect
of resident service. The revised rate of allowance is effective as
from 1st April, 1947, but an officer who has left Government service
before the date of issue of this circular will not have his allowances
adjusted.
2. The following categories of officers will be paid high cost
of living allowance in accordance with Scale A:-

(a) Officers with dependent wives and/or children.
(b) Officers legally maintaining divorced or
separated wives.
(c) Officers legally maintaining a child or
children of a dissolved or separated marriage.
The following categories of officers will be paid high cost
of living allowance in accordance with Scale B:-
(a) Unmarried officers.
(b) Widows or widowers without dependent children.
(c) Married officers legally separated and not
maintaining wives and/or children.
(a) Married women, whether with or without dependent
children, whose husbands are not in the Colony.
Neither high cost of living nor rehabilitation allowance is payable to a married woman whose husband is employed in the Colony.
